Despite the large number of sites operating at any given time, few have operated continuously for long periods. Thus, we have broken up the trends into two periods: 1988–96 (62 sites; 30 states) and 1993–2004 (156 sites; 33 states). All regions of the country are represented, and the period of overlap suggests that both groups of sites are representative of trends in PM10 levels across the country. Figure 3-5 also shows more recent trends and a wider array of locations by including data for 441 sites that operated from 1999 to 2004.
On the other hand, a small number of areas of the country that had persistently high PM10 levels tended to add monitoring sites to provide more detailed information on PM10 levels within the region. html (accessed January 15, 2006). of sites in high-PM areas and their removal in low-PM areas creates a false appearance that PM10 was not declining.
