However, one significant weakness of these methods is the lack of capability of translating human knowledge into computational rules that can be utilized to distinguish different faces and non-faces. Yang and Huang [3] presented a hierarchical knowledge-based method to detect faces. This system has three levels of rules. The top level observes that possible face candidates are found by sliding a window over the input image and applying a set of rules at each location. At level 2, local histogram equalization was performed on the face candidates.
4 Feature Extraction An important feature that establishes the uniqueness of a fingerprint is its minutiae comprising ridge endings and bifurcations as shown in Fig. 1. Most automated fingerprint recognition systems are based on minutiae matching. Therefore, extracting the minutiae is required prior to matching. A common approach to achieve this is to binarize the enhanced fingerprint image into black and white using thresholding means.
