Service companies are more and more fascinated with providing triple-play bundles that include web, video, and VoIP services–as good as multi-play bundles containing much more complex providers. Broadband community Architectures is the 1st finished consultant to designing, enforcing, and handling the networks that make triple-play prone possible.
Hellberg, Greene, and Boyes current their field-tested most sensible practices and objectively overview the tradeoffs linked to key up-front architectural judgements that stability the complexities of bundled prone and complicated site visitors rules. Broadband community Architectures no longer simply files what's attainable in this quickly altering box of networking, however it additionally info easy methods to divide net entry into those extra subtle companies with really expert caliber of carrier handling.

14 SERVICE EVOLUTION SERVICE EVOLUTION RESIDENTIAL ACCESS SERVERS To deliver IP services across large numbers of narrowband or broadband connections, a new type of device was required to terminate all these user sessions. This new class of device required a broad combination of functionality, including routing, subscriber management, interface management, and quality of service. As a result, the standards groups worked to develop specifications to solve some of these problems. Many vendors also developed hardware and software products to fulfill the demands of these requirements.

Initially, DSLAMs operated as a dense but relatively simple Layer 2 device. Early DSLAMs physically terminated copper loops and were responsible for handling line encoding. On the other side of the DSLAM, individual DSL subscriber connections could be aggregated into a higher-bandwidth trunk interface. Later 11 CHAPTER 1 A HISTORY OF BROADBAND NETWORKS DSLAMs would evolve into multiservice platforms, coupled with ATM switching, Quality of Service (QoS) functionality, IP routing, different line encoding schemes, security, and otherwise, as described later in this book.

The 1950s and 1960s also saw the beginnings of space-based communications systems, with the launch of Sputnik1 in 1957. The CCIR established a group responsible for the study of space-based radio communications in 1959. 1963 saw the allocation of frequencies to the various space services, and the beginnings of governance and regulation of radio frequency spectrum by satellites. In 1992, spectrum was identified for use in IMT2000, the ITU developed global standard for digital mobile technology. IMT-2000 was developed as a way to harmonize interoperability between the incompatible mobile telecommunication systems used around the world, by providing a technical foundation for new high-speed wireless broadband systems and devices capable of handling voice and data services.
