20 Introduction lain, Halifax (and later Eden) were preoccupied by the international events which faced the country. They had responsibility, knowledge, experience and a view (often a changing one) and they continued to matter (Chamberlain until he became ill). The Chamberlain papers include his letters - to his sisters and step-mother - and his diary and offer much detail for the first months of Churchill's leadership during the battle for and fall of France, Holland and Belgium. Halifax's papers include a diary and, though brief, modify and refine the official papers and Churchill's record; and among Eden's papers and notes are detailed accounts of his discussions in Cairo, Athens and Angora and a note of his discussions with Churchill (and colleagues), the substance of many of which were published in the course of his autobiography.
